Central Michigan football beats rival at home in thriller

For the first time since 2010 the Central Michigan football team were able to hold off the rivaling Western Michigan Broncos on route to a 16-14 win on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The Chippewas entered the contest at 3-7 on the season with Western sitting at 5-5 on the year with a 4-2 Mid-American Conference record. The spread at kick off was -6.5 in favor of the Broncos after a five game loss streak snuffed out Central Michigan's hopes of a bowl game bid.

For the first time in many weeks CMU's defense looked prepared, having easily their best game of the season as a unit.

Western Michigan entered the game with the second ranked rushing offense in the MAC, but were utterly dominated at the line of scrimmage. The Broncos were held to only 50 yards on the ground, their lowest since their week two contest with Ohio State, and second lowest of the season.

While the WMU offense struggled to find rhythm rushing the ball, the defense was failing to stop the rush as CMU's running back room ran wild against the Broncos. Marion Lukes spearheaded the rushing attack for the Chippewas with 93 yards on 15 carries.

The Central Michigan rush attack was much needed after another underwhelming performance at the quarterback position.

What does any of this mean for Central Michigan?

It's hard to say now, but perhaps head coach Jim McElwain bought himself more time in Mount Pleasant.

With Central Michigan once again unlikely to make a bowl game, disgruntled fans showed their disappointment for coach McElwain and his staff all over social media, but a marquee win over Western may be enough to allow him to see another year of his contract.

For Western Michigan however, the season just got a lot tougher.

Going into the game the Broncos had a small, but possible shot at the MAC title, which the Chippewas have now crushed. However, the loss tonight means WMU now have to fight through the final week of the season to even have a chance to make a bowl game.

Western Michigan's failure this week pushes the Broncos to their third straight loss, and has many fans on x, formerly twitter, discussing their frustration with the coaching staff in the post below.
